The Coast Guard Recruits are required to acquire the skills and competencies of an Ordinary Seaman in the Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG). Recruits will undergo 12 weeks of basic training, assessing their suitability for continuing service within the CICG.

Upon completion of the basic training and having achieved passes in all of the assessment areas, each candidate will be given the designation of Coast Guard Recruit for a one-year probationary period and be attached to one of the various operational detachments within the CICG, where they will continue to learn and develop their professional competence and proficiency within each core discipline learned during basic training.

The CICG offers two distinct career tracks: working in the Sea Detachment where officers deploy to sea daily, or working within the Shore Detachment, where officers serve as emergency call takers and rescue coordination specialists.

Having successfully completed the assessments and probationary period, a Coast Guard Recruit will be enlisted into the CICG and given the designation of an Ordinary Seaman.
